Past. Bochum once had more coal mines than any other town in the Ruhr valley. In the mid-19th century coal and steel brought prosperity to the town. After World War II a time of change began, during which not only Bochum but the whole region had to redefine itself. Many sectors had to re-map their course for the future: Bochum was re-built. The Ruhr University was planned, the Opel car plant would be set up, a new theatre would be erected amidst the ruins. A refreshing mix of friendliness and warmth, student scene and cutting-edge culture evolved - unique in its breadth and vitality.
Present. Today, Bochum has a wealth of offerings - shaped and created by the people who live here. More than any other city in the Ruhr metropolis, its hallmark is its vibrant theatre scene. Some 40 stages and ensembles are mainstays of the city's cultural life. Vergangenheit. Bochum war einst die zechenreichste Stadt im Ruhrgebiet. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ließen Kohle und Stahl die Stadt erblühen. Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges brach eine Zeit des Wandels an, in der nicht nur Bochum, sondern eine ganze Region sich neu erfinden musste. Es galt, in vielen Bereichen die Weichen für die Zukunft neu zu stellen: Bochum wurde wieder aufgebaut. Man konzipierte die Ruhr-Universität, beschloss die Ansiedlung von Opel, errichtete in der noch immer zerstörten Stadt ein neues Schauspielhaus. So entstand eine liebenswerte Mischung aus Kumpelmentalität, Studentenszene und zeitgemäßer Kultur – einzigartig in ihrer Vielfalt und Vitalität.
Gegenwart. Heute präsentiert sich Bochum mit abwechslungsreichen Angeboten – geformt und gestaltet von den Menschen, die hier leben.
